What you have is probably a jumped cog or some other mechanical fault.

Julian, you're right, I have relatively little to lose (compared to the replacement cost) by sending it off for investigation. It might cost me £30 or so for the round trip, which might be throwing good money after bad, but it must be worth that, even if it's just to dispel the notion that it might be something easily fixed.

Well, "easily" if you have a very steady hand, a lot of experience, and the right manual! :->
