I completely agree with the folk who have suggested that a prime lens not only frees you from decision-making and focal-length anxiety, but in the case of the 35mm f1.4 vs the zoom, another factor worth bearing in mind is the function of the aperture ring. The 35mm has (beautifully) etched marks on the ring and stops at either end of the range; the zoom doesn't have any marks and rotates freely - you have to look into the viewfinder to read/adjust the aperture. That slows me down - I *much* prefer the feel of a traditional aperture ring...
