One thing you might consider, the modern FX sensors do well with higher ISO settings so you can get lenses that weigh less (which usually translates into a smaller maximum f/stop).  For instance you might try the new Nikon 70-200 f/4 and see if that's something that you can handle.  An even lighter lens is the Nikon 28-200.  While that lens has some geometric issues, as long as you don't take images of brick walls, you should be OK.
