Re: Nikon D800 or D7100 for aspiring photographer

The 14-24 IMHO is wasted on a DX camera, and the others are kinda odd focal length sets other than maybe the 70-200, the 24-70 isn't wide enough and the 14-24 is wide but why in the world would you put such a behemoth in front of a DX camera when Tokina makes teh 11-16 f2.8 which is nearly as good on DX and is truly wide.

I think you should take a step back and look in another direction.  If you really dislike the ergo and finder size etc of the D7100, go audition a D600.  Similar capabilities, reasonable FPS (right now there's no high FPS choice outside of the D4 or using your current D7100 in 1.3x crop mode) bigger camera by a little bit, and bigger finder.  I have a D7000 and a D600 and I much prefer the D600 for it's better view finder and amazing full frame image quality.  Personally I use the D600, 16-35 f4 VR, 24-85 VR and 70-200 f4 VR as my "not quite a trinity".  Hypothetically if I went with the 24-120 f4 I'd have the f4 VR set, but I'm not sure I'm sold on that lens.  The D600 would take to the trinity fine, or you can use almost any of the standard G series full frame lens currently made as they're all pretty good again now that they've been updated.
