This seems to be a common problem with this printer.  As my printing needs are infrequent, guess this printer would not work for me.

I understand the the 3880 is a bit more forgiving - may be my next purchase.

Or consider the Canon iPF5100, with all the "pro" features of the 4900 and more - vacuum transport, power roll-feed, totally lossless auto PK/Mk switching w/ 12 inks, and thermal heads that simply don't clog in the traditional sense, with total freedom from routine nozzle check prints and forced head cleanings.

The two heads have a huge nozzle redudantancy with auto-remapping of failed nozzles (generally electro-thermal burnout IMO). Eventually you will get a head error message, a defective nozzle pattern with no response to cleanings, but the $450 heads are easily user-replaceable.

Over six years, with two generations of this printer, never a problem after prolonged non-use during travels, and some 6000 sq ft printed, and one pair of heads replaced.
