Lightroom JPEG preview: What am I missing here?

First, please forgive my ignorance but I only recently switched from film to digital so I'm still noticing new things everyday.

I'm aware that my camera gives me nice JPEG previews to view while out shooting raw, so that's not really the confusion. Yesterday I noticed that when I begin to import those raw files into Lightroom it looks like even Lightroom gives a quick JPEG preview in the library, but as soon as I click on a thumbnail to move into the develop module it reverts it back to the flat, dark raw file. Am I correct in assuming this is normal practice for Lightroom?

Even though I know the in-camera preview is JPEG, I still get a little bummed when I come to Lightroom and actually witness them change over to those flat SOOC shots. I do love shooting raw, but I'm still not extremely confident in my PP skills to get them looking good like they do in-camera.

Thanks for enlightening me!
