Macro mode, tightest shots
Been experimenting with macro mode, to see and figure out what the true sweet spot is, turns out it seems to be around 5.0x zoom where it focuses somewhere between 1 inch - 1.5 inches from the subject (this is around 113.5mm on the HS20/25/30/35 and would be around 118.5mm on the HS10)- note, on the lens barrel, this is marked as 135mm.
The following images have a real world width of about 1.5 inches or around 38mm, this makes the macro ratio 6:1- by comparison the Olympus C-7070 with a 1/1.8 sensor took super macros with a real world minimum width of around 28mm- so these are pretty comparable (Oly is around 4:1).
I set the camera to spot metering (which I find is best for macros and long zoom shots with a TC), continuous AF, macro mode, shutter priority (which is a good way to keep the ISO down in AUTO ISO mode as you can select the shutter speed that best matches your steadiness), M size DR 400.
Note, I was experimenting with some higher zoom ratios (around 7.8x) which you can use up to 3 inches focal distance, so I had the shutter speed set to 1/100 sec, therefore the camera selected high ISO like 2000 and 2500 and the following examples, I could have easily doubled this to 1/50 sec for 5x zoom, and this would have kept the ISO to around 1000- but this is pretty good nonetheless for such high ISO- of course NR is set to Low and Sharpening is set to Soft.
Note: these are just some macro test shots, once spring really gets going here over the next week or two, there should be some REAL macro ops! I welcome macro shots from others, I really want to see what the tightest macro sweet spot is for the HS50 (using the zoom magnification ratio on the LCD and minimal focal distance.)
