The Epson 7800 Stylus Pro is an Ink printer with 2880 x 1240 dpi. Thats still 3,5 Mp.

3.5 MP (actually Mdpi) per square inch.

So if your reasoning was correct even 36 MP would not be enough to print a 6x4 photo.

Explanation: dpi do not translate into pixels. A crude description of how a printer reproduces continuous tone pictures with only a few inks to start with is that several dots are combined to create the equivalent of a pixel. The exact process used is called dithering. See this link (for particular application to printers scroll down to the "Applications" header and read the last paragraph).
