Re: Beginner has lens hood question

Hi, I too hike and have reduced my equipment to the minimum, but still use a DSLR (Nikon D5100).  I have 18-55, 55-200 and 35 lenses all with the same filter thread of 52mm. I opted to buy one collapsible, rubber wide angle hood (for the 18-55) and one collapsible normal rubber hood (for the 35 and 55-200). I also use a protect filer when necessary (although hood also does a good job of protecting the lens element) and a polarizing filer; both 52mm screw in. The filters have front threads so I screw the filter to the lens and then the hood. Never had any issues with vignetting, even at 18mm.  Pro: a simple, small and light weight set. Con: have to screw everything to the front of the lens. For me the pro outweighs the con.

You can get these cheap, collapsible rubber hoods on Amazon. Hope that helps.
