I was recently experimenting with night pictures with my 450D.  While the LiveView usually gains up to reflect the exposure settings, I got nothing but black.  I had to use the OVF to frame the shots.  On my Tamron 17-50VC I could use the distance scale and a DOF app to set the focus.

Do the newer Rebels' displays gain up at night?  I understand that higher-level Canons, such as the 5D3 and 6D do.

I'm not sure if you are having a problem with a 450d as in the body or 650d as in the title.

On my 450d if it is dark and I am using Live View then I see on the screen the same as I would if I took the shot.  So for a night shot I have to set a long exposure time.  If it is so dark that I end up on Bulb then nothing really shows up.
