This approach is very effective if you are the market leader, or if you are not, but the market leader does the same thing.

But if you have a low market share, and your high-end-only feature is a standard feature on the cameras from the market leader, then you are just making it more difficult to gain market share from the market leader.

And that is precisely the case here. Tethering is a standard feature on Canon DSLRs, as far as I know.
