But it says:

Benefits provided by previous updates and included in version 3.1:

  • Adds support for additional models

I think it supported cameras mentioned in earlier version already.

I read that no differently than how they word their firmware updates stating how the most recent update includes the improvements provided in past updates.  That could imply when they added the A99.  They don't state that as being a reason for the latest update.

In other words, if you never updated to the previous versions and go straight to the latest then you will gain all the improvements incorporated in the previous versions.  There is no need to update through each version to acquire said improvements.

This specific update mentions adding or improving on the following over version 3.0:

  • Adds the Picture Effect shooting mode icon
  • Adds the Flash Off shooting mode icon
  • Adds the flash mode capability for Slow Sync (Red eye reduction ON/OFF)

Of course, Sony on more than one occasion has added improvements without listing it in the documentation.  The best way to find out is to try it.  Someone with an A58 needs to see if tethering works.

Don't forget that the other improvement from previous versions was the addition of Windows 8 support.
