Would you consider the "L" lenses too much for a T4i or T5i?

I was talking to a friend of mine who went and got himself a Canon T5i and a 100mm L Macro Lens. To say the least, I'm very jealous of him owning that lens. However, I told him that in my opinion, an L series lens was a bit over the top for a beginner's DSLR. His response was that the T4i & T5i can't really be considered beginner since they borrow the same sensor/autofocus system as the 60D. Or that at the very least are very similar to it. I'm just curious as to what others here think. Do you think that any L series lenses are over the top for the T4i and T5i or do you think that they are perfectly acceptable?
