An alternative approach might be to get some height to your shooting position.  In this way you can look down on the group, at an angle, and see the faces of the guys at the back as well as the front and middle.  You can then assemble your folks in a way that better suits the dimensions of your camera sensor.

How's your balance (on a step ladder)?

The flippy screen of my A57 allows me to hold the camera up with the screen pointing where I can see it. I never use the EVF (never ever).

Problem with the holding up approach with the fish eye. You end up pointing the camera downwards a lot, and you end up looking down on the scene, losing the feel that you're part of the crowd. Odd angles. But then, fisheye is very odd to begin without.
