position to compete in the mirrorless market because they can re-use the technologies and components from their huge smartphone market (touchscreens, SoCs, CMOS sensors) whereas the smaller players like Fuji, Olympus and Panasonic are going to have to source everything.

Nikon has to source a lot more and seem to be doing just fine. Doing everything yourself can have its disadvantages too. Like developing costs, cost of personel, risk of investing in new technology with a less than desirable (less returns than expected) outcome. Panasonic is no small player here BTW, Nikon and Canon are from that perspective.

Also: not all that phone technology might not be simply applicabe to photocams. Also you may say that expertise in the photgraphic department or lack thereoff might be a much more decisive factor. Like: too big (RAW) files, bad JPEG engines (both Samsung and Panasonic seem to be subpar here), but also incorporating technology no DSLR photographer is really wanting currently but not incorporating that what they do want (did I mention an EVF would be nice?).

Again you need to put your money where it generates the most profit and that seems to be marketing, which is what some of those players including Samsung seem to be lacking currently in the photodepartment.  Nikon and canon but also Sony seem much more effective here.
