The short answer is no, but the 2006 European regulations effectively required it and Nikon has been using lead-free solder in all consumer products since then.

I can accept that the science might still be unclear as to whether reductions in lead content do cause tin whiskers and thereby shorten the life of products like lenses.

It's been almost 7 years -- but I'm not how forthcoming manufacturers are being with root cause analysis.
