maths would be a contraction of Mathematics

I am infact a native English speaker, however not American English, Canadian English, UK English or even Austrailian English, but New Zealand English.

My Wife is a native Spanish speaker, and in the past has asked me questions about why some words dont "follow the rules" - sometimes I know why, often I dont.

Language is a very personal thing - it is coloured by your location, your upbringing, your schooling and personal experiences
