People that claim there is a meaningful difference in physical size are kidding themselves, in my opinion.

I don't know about "people", but I do know what matters for me. A full frame body + lens on a 690 gram weight budget was a reality 40 years ago and I would be interested in such a system today.

Any able-bodied adult ought to be able to carry around more than 690 grams.  My water bottle weighs more than that!
