Just how crappy is the 16-50 kit lens? Test vs 17mm prime & 11-16 Tokina

Relative to where you're coming from and where you're going :)

For me that is usually up or down big hills wearing a backpack. So a prime concern is the weight to results/range ratio.

As a backpacker/photographer I want the most bang per gram...bang meaning IQ/ability to grab the scenes anticipated/etc.  I was carrying the 16mm pancake. It was/is the lightest in the Nex lens lineup and for the most part was a suitable lens for what I'd see on the trail.

Enter the PZ16-50 and horns bells and whistles start going off. For such little added weight I get so much in return and loose only a stop(ish). The only chagrin is that of my Nex lineup (5,6,7) it's the 5 that I like to put in the pack.

One would think the 16mm or the 1650 wouldn't do for wildlife while hiking, hmmmm:
