The most versatile...in my experience with ...oh my goodness....30 plus cameras...is one that I still own...the Sony RX100....and it too is limited.  But it makes good images, has good AF, and fits in my pocket.

If a camera isn't with you, ie.. like those big heavy units....then it's a dud.  The best camera is the one you have with you.  Yeah, sometimes its an slr with several lenses too.  Sometimes.
