Personally, except for low light photography, I would never choose to shoot wide open.

To me, a lens faster than f/2.8 is primarily to improve low light capabilities. So, using an 85mm f/1.4 wide open is unnecessary in good light unless a very shallow DoF is desired. However, with FF (or a larger sensor in general), you can go to f/2.8, for more contrast and sharpness, and while maintaining better subject isolation, something smaller sensor will lack unless used wide open.
