The higher spatial frequency information from these higher megapixel cameras is at lower contrast. Hence the need for sharper, more contrasty lenses to keep up. I also think the D300 may have a weaker OLPF than the D7000 - but the D7100 has none. On balance I think my D7100 is slightly sharper than my D300 and D300s.
