Flash photography

Last night, I was shooting indoors with a friend. I was using my 540 on K5 and he was shooting with a canon 430 on his 7D. We wanted to take continuous shots with flash which was a total failure in my case however he could manage to shoot at low speed continuous at about 2 frames per second with flash. I know that the recycle time of 540 is longer than 430 (6 vs 3 seconds) but I want to ask if there is a way to do better with various settings on 540? I tried to use manual flash on 1/64 or 1/32 but to no avail.

Best regards,
