I mostly use the 'Photographic' preset under 'Tone mapping'. This gives excellent results. Mind you anything, IMHO, coming out of Photomatix still needs fine tuning. I use PSPx5 for polishing up my work.

Yes, with Photomatix itself I always have to polish up in LR, too. That was one of the reasons why I started using the Merge To... plugin. Since I was having to work on the image in LR anyway, why not do all of the tone mapping there and just the HDR merging with the plugin?

And that has turned out to be better for me - YMMV.
