I gave up my 80-200 f/2.8 for the 70-200 f/4, and it was a terrific decision.  For the money, I could have had a 70-200 f/2.8 VRI, but the weight was my main issue.  It was so heavy that I left it at home a lot.  Since I got the f/4, it hasn't come out of the bag.  It is sharp, focuses quickly and seems to do just fine in the low-light I've been shooting in (non-sports).  I love it!

If you're a serious shooter of night/indoor sports, you might find the f/4 limiting, but my guess is with a D800 that most shooters will be pretty happy.  I actually borrowed my buddy's 70-200 f/2.8 VRI for the weekend to do some experimentation on just that (though I have a less-capable D300s).
