I appreciate your dilemma. I am asking myself the same questions and I'm no kid, so carrying all this heavy stuff is (literally) a pain.

I have the Tokina 16-28 too and think it's a great, very sharp lens but I almost need a wagon to carry it around. I mostly use a D600 these days and also have the new 24-85 VR which is quite small and really the IQ has been quite good for nature and landscapes. I have been very tempted by the 20mm AF-D solution, but was put off by some older review comments on IQ/sharpness, so the new 18-35 D is sounding more and more like a good idea, paired with the new 70-200 f/4. The 70-200 f/2.8 is just too big, like the Tokina.  I have a 70-300 VR, which is pretty small and seems actually better with the D600 than it was with my DX bodies, especially in the middle of it's range.

So maybe the best hiking kit is:

18-35 AF-D

24-85mm AF-S VR

70-200 f/4 AF-S VR

or replace the 24-85 with 2 sharp little primes which I do some times.

50mm f/1.8 (or whatever one you like, I have the 1.4 D)

85mm f/1.8

But what happens whine I want my 105 Micro for bugs and flowers and my fun (and pretty light) Tamron 200-500 for wildlife?  Rent a mule, I guess.
