Good point Phil,

No way i am going to take a 12-35.  Price/ risk is indeed in favor of the 9-18 or even a  cheap 14 mm or small kitzoom from ebay.  But with these lenses there is no point to take the camera, because i can take the same pictures with all the p&s that other people bring with them.

I also think that with the smaller lenses  the risk of damage is less, because they are easier to stow away.
