That is an excellent point.  I recently slid 2,000 feet down an icy mountainside with the 12-50 lens inadvertantly taking the brunt of the exposure in the back of my pack.  And it came through fine.  You can knock the size since it doesn't collapse, but it is fairly sturdy overall with its construction.
