I'm having trouble uploading to the galleries here but can send you a raw and camera jpeg of some pretty detailed outdoor buildings with tons of detailed bricks etc.

Well lit, high contrast scenes are not the problem, the low contrast scenes full of fine detail are the problem, especially in shadow and mid-tone areas. For fine weather and macro shooters, the camera might seem great, they will most likely not notice the problem. Also, it is less noticeable if all you do is view at screen sizes, for web or blogs.

And why do you assume I was shooting a high contrast fine weather shot?

I think you are grossly exaggerating your 2mp claim but I'm not going to get into a back and forth about it. Can you give me your compact camera of choice so I can calibrate my thinking around what you are using as a comparison?

I assumed brick detail would be well lit, but you are right, I assumed. Of the really compact cameras, my benchmarks are F100fd and F200EXR, from the enthusiast compact crowd I like Pentax MX-1 the best (in IQ), Canon G-15 is a good all rounder.
