I build my own computers also - with premium components - one of which failed.

I build my computers too, plus servers.  I don't (usually) use premium hard drives, because I have so many.  (Most are test servers, and some test pc's, and some I just built for fun.  I've had up to 22 running at once, between home, home office and remote office).

I have had MANY hard drive failures.  And being a long-time IT consultant, I've seen many horror stories when it comes to backups that ... weren't.

I count on drives failing.   Best I can do is try to minimize the temperature on them as it really kills them fast.    Other than that, I simply build in a lot of redundancy.

This was taken a few years back.  I've had twice the number of failure since then:

A few dead drives after a year in my (overly warm) office

I'd say I've lost at least 30 hard drives in the last 10 years.   It gets your attention.
