How to speed up workflow for Press Release

Wondering if any working photographers out there can advise what programmes / workflow they use from taking out the memory card from their camera(s) to getting out the shots to the client for say press release.  In particular how you deal with hundreds of pics from a sport shoot.  Am using Windows  + D4 / D3s + D800 .  ND using laptop as on location.

My steps are thus:

1. CF/SD/XQD card out of cameras

2. Offload files of all "basic JPEGs FX" onto the laptop

3. Import all pics into Lightroom

4. Select and edit most appropriate shots

5. Export out JPEGs + resize same time into Final Folder

6. Transfer small JPEGs to client

Am finding Step 2 can take some time to do if dealing with hundreds of files, especially sport shoots

Step 3 isn't too bad timewise but still takes time.  Is Lightroom the most appropriate programme for selection and simple edits e.g. crop / tone.

Be interested to hear of other ways of speeding up the workflow.

Do photographers just use Explorer to view images then dump preferred shots into a simple editing programme?

thanks in advance for any advise
