USB 2 = 480 megabits/second
FireWire 400 = 400 megabits/second
...the reality is that the way FireWire is architected makes it more efficient than USB. For example, FireWire is independently controlled by its own chipset, while USB must compete with whatever other priorities the CPU is dealing with. So FireWire 400 can usually maintain higher sustained transfer rates in the real world than USB 2.
