We used to "click" much less than today... thinking more before pressing a shutter button.

I guess number of usable shots were the same though

What is the right metric?

  • clicks
  • "keepers" or at least shots you'd show to friends or family
  • 5-star shots (or pick the number of stars) or shots you'd print larger or enter in competitions.

I think the bar has been raised, or at least, there are many more that can now get professional grade shots that would not have happened back before the DSLR that we now have. Digital has allowed this through quick review and therefore quick learning and therefore quick adjustment and reassessment of your shot at the time rather than having to wait until you get your film developed and finding out you missed the critical shot.
