D80 was my first camera also, and the bad reviews it got were really only after subsequent bodies were released and the metering got better. Thom even changed his review later due to high amp noise and other issues.

I thoroughly researched my D80 purchase and if it had been getting bad reviews at the time I bought it, I would have hesitated buying it, which I did not. After getting a D300, I agreed with the knocks on the D80, not that any of the issues really impacted my style of shooting. I never regretted the D80 and have no concerns using it today.

To the OPs comment. I don't think anyone is saying the D60 is bad, just that it is not as good featurewise for the pricepoint as other comparable bodies. It can certainly take spectacular images just like any modern body can in the right hands.
