300mm Telephoto Lens and Boudoire Photography, am I missing something? Locked

You used the word "strictly", which is wrong.

The other option, of course, is to increase aperture diameter as you get farther away.

Shooting at 20mm and f/4 (I have a lens for that) gives me an aperture of 5mm (20mm/4).  I could get 10 times farther away and shoot at 200mm and f/2.8 for an aperture of 71.4mm (200mm/2.8), which is more than 10 times as much aperture at 10 times the distance, which is why it's a "brighter" lens at f/2.8.  It'll capture more light from the same subject in the same scene illumination even though it's 10 times farther away, just because it's much bigger.
