When there is absolutely no light available, except for your flash, it's simple! You can use ANY shutter speed you like that does not exceed your 'X' synch speed. The results will all be the same.

So, whilst it is normal to use the fastest speed available (X), even if you don't, but use a slower speed instead...

... if there is ZERO other light around (no ambient light at all)...

...then obviously there will be no other light to record no matter how long the shutter is left open.

However, I must admit to being a little puzzled.....
