Shooting a brick wall recently (see my reply to the OP below, BTW I only bother if I see something I don't like in a lens when using it) I was very (!! even extremely) surprised by the additional sharpness I got with a £149 Canon prime wide-open on a FF camera (5DmkII) over a £999 zoom on a GH3. It's partly the lower noise but a lot of it is just outright extra resolution.

Photozone convinced me I didn't have a dud 12-35 as they have the 40/2.8 wide-open in the extreme corners as 2950 lw/ph vs the 12-35 just about gets that in the centre at f4 (where the Canon is 3724). Plus the Canon corners are further away from the centre than the m43 ones. The Panny 25/1.4 just about hits 2300 in the corners at f5.6. (Only limited comparisons are available as I'm sticking to m43 lenses they've tested at 16MP, but the 25/1.4 seems well thought of, I prefer the 20/1.7 personally.)

Did you notice the big warning sign on Photozone's front page? The one that reads:

Please note that the tests results are not comparable across the different systems!

So let's have a look at some comparable figures from LensRentals. The results are line pairs per image height based on output from unsharpened RAWs, center/average.
