I know this post is a few years old, but I thought I would share the solution I found to the problem. A program called SageThumbs works well to view psd thumbnails (and more) in windows explorer, and the best part is that it is free. Here is the link:

When I first intalled it, I did have some issues where it displayed some of my psd files' thumbnails but not all of them, so I did a quick google search and came up with the solution, which is pretty simple; it just involves changing the settings in the SageThumbs program. Basically, all you have to do is check the box that says, "Prefer image file embedded thumbnails" and choose a higher "Maximum size of image file," for example 200MB. Here's the link to show you how to do it (the solution I suggested is taken from this link, but the link at least illustrates it, too):

Hope this helps; it worked for me. And free is always better.

I played a bit with sagethumbs and can conclude that it is not as good or convenient as mystic thumbs. First, you only get previews bij right clicking the file and there are not that many options as well.

Mystic thumbs lets you see the previews immediatly when you open a folder, still way more convenient then clicking a file!
