Probably the smartest idea yet.  Further, if you have the luxury of actually visiting a real camera store do so - playing with the various brands and models should be a lot of fun.  Maybe you don't want a DSLR at all....

There are lots of options these days.  You're free to pick.

Personally, I'd go with a D800 from a reputable dealer and not worry about the big files.  They aren't much of a hindrance on modern computers.
