fz200 macro/close up shots - am I doing something wrong?

I'm getting a bit frustrated with trying to get close ups with the fz200 and cant work out whether its operator error (most likely) or the camera

I know that the closest focusing distance in macro mode is 1cm - but does that mean that the camera has to be right on top of the subject to get the image to fill the frame?

When ever I put the camera onto macro AF I'm getting the 1m-infinty red screen if I'm not fully zoomed out - but then the image doesn't fill the frame? Most times the camera wont focus, with the red square coming up

I have tried manual focus (I think MF assist is on) and still not getting the results I wanted, which makes me think its most likely operator error.

Is it just that all the hundreds of close ups from the fz200 have been taken with a teleconvertor or close up lens?

Am i being a doughnut?

Many thanks
