I actually specialize in location photography where relying on a histogram would be even more cumbersome than in a studio. I do a mix of editorial and commercial in a wide variety of interior and exterior venues. (My only studio shoot was at Brooks eons ago...) Most of my metering is incident rather than spot. I generally only use spot metering when I cannot directly measure the light.

The main difference between us Victor is I am about practicality while you are focused on theory. Apparently you have plenty of free time to argue about something vs. actually putting your theories into practice...

Try doing a location shoot with multiple strobes in mixed lighting using only your DSLR meter and the histogram to determine exposure, lighting-ratios and ambient/flash ratio. Then get back to me about how long it took with the resulting image(s).

I won't be holding my breath...
