Truly the traveling photographer's friend

My iPad 3 is the second I've owned, and it is truly one of the most magnificent devices I've ever owned. For the traveling photographer, it's a joy in every sense.

First of all, with the Camera Connector kit, you can see your work before you leave a location. And with excellent editing apps like Photogene for stills and Pinnacle for video, you can do a lot of quick, excellent editing on the road. Its Retina screen is as close to viewing an 8x10 Kodachrome transparency on a light box as you will see digitally reproduced. It's just that good.

Second, it stores RAW images as RAW, and displays them as JPEGs in full color and definition. I've loaded Nikon D300, D7000 and Sony NEX-6 RAW images onto it, and the color and resolution are always outstanding. Thus, it is a display, editing AND storage device - so I'm glad I bought the 64GB version, and long for a 128GB (or larger) successor.

Third, it is a very competent traveling laptop replacement. I've traveled extensively through both the EU and Middle East, and always found good connections at places from small B&Bs to McDonald's. Email, document production (with DocsToGo and Pages) is wonderful. With LogMeIn Ignition or PocketCloud, you can remotely access and control your home laptop or desktop from the road.

If you add a Zagg keyboard, as I did, the iPad 3 becomes a virtual "iPad Air." I strongly recommend it.

The iPad 3 has been replaced by the iPad 4 with up to 128GB storage, and that may be shortly replaced by an iPad 5. But for most users, the iPad 3 will remain an excellent, likely off-priced choice - likely from the Apple refurbished page.
