How long does a lens have to be, to be an issue for a Tripod?

300mm is too expensive and too limited as a one lens system.

You should also avoid changing lens in the open, especially where there are small flying insects. I learn this lesson once in a park, a small bug managed to get into my mirror camber while I change lens. It get crash between the mirror and the ground glass. It took me many hours of careful cleaning to get rid of all it remain!
