Final EC-14 test: pro-league volleyball with SHG and EC-14

So I first tested the newly-acquired (second hand) EC-14 teleconverter (1,4x) on my ZD50-200mm for mostly static scenes and some wildlife on a wintery walk to the park :

Next the EC-14 was mounted with the SHG lenses for some low light zoo shooting:

In the coming weeks, I will also be using the EC-14 with less obvious lenses (like the ZD8mm FE) but that will be for fun and not as a test of the teleconverter's abilities.

My final real-world test, was last Wednesday, during a pro-league volleyball match.  I took my E-3 and E-5 and the ZD35-100 and ZD150 as lenses.  The EC-14 was always mounted on one of the cameras (mostly extending the 35-100 to 50-140, but sometimes also extending 150 to 210).

What are the conclusions?

* No image degradation that I can pinpoint (maybe there is some, but that is always hard to tell in circumstances where also shots without EC-14 are hit-and-miss).  However, there may be a tendency to slightly more softness :  I did notice that my keeper rate, when judging for sharpness, was just a bit higher on the non-extended lens.

* AF speed remains roughly the same (although I used MF most of the time).  Still, using MF upped the keeper rate maybe just a bit more for the lens on which the converter was mounted, so there might be a very slight loss of AF speed or accuracy.

* Especially on the ZD35-100, the range is much improved : previously I hardly used the wider end and got frequently frustrated by the 100mm limit.  With the EC-14, the ZD35-100 becomes a very good range for sports.

* On the 150, the EC-14 will be more useful when I am further away from the action.

Gallery for those interested in visual results:

EXIF is intact, so you can see which images were extended and which not.  The gallery slideshow shows the images at their biggest size.

Some samples (picking only shots made WITH the EC-14):

Thanks for looking.

C&C Welcome.
