Canon also states that the SL1 has a new sensor which is not even shared with the T5i. So it's a different type of smaller dSLR.

You sir, are keeping the Canon marketing (read: hype) department humming.

When the megapixels are the same, the sensor is the same?

So, 24 megapixel sensor in the Nikon D7100 is the same as the 24 megapixel sensor in the Nikon D5200.

I didn't say they're the same, but is it substantially different enough to be meaningful to the user? Canon could move the LCD screen of the T5i one millimeter to the left and call it a different camera, the T6i, and we're suppose to take it at their word? Time to think for ourselves.

If you are talking about the differences between the T4i and the T5i, I agree it is pretty disappointing.  Just like a car manufactures new for this year model.

But, first, Canon's technological advance of being able to integrate phase detect focus sensors on the image sensor, is being totally underrated. Especially since they were able to do it without substantially impacting the IQ of the sensor.

Expanding the number of focus sensors on the SL1 while evolutionary compared to the T4i, but is revolutionary compared to the T3's sensor.
