Re: Leica today opened new manufacturing facilities in Portugal

Just another bit of history...

Back in the sixties one of the Leitz brothers used to spend his Summer vacations in the southern cost of Portugal, the Algarve. He enjoyed his stays in Portugal and decided to look for a third manufacturing alternative, after they opened their plant in Canada.

The current location (V. N. Famalicão) was chosen for three main reasons:

1. Ability to hire skilled metal machinists luring them away from a portuguese clock manufacturing facility that later was acquired by Schlumberger (prouction of mechanical industrial meters ). So they had the people required for delicate metal work for their M's and R's.

2. The proximity of an airport, 50 minutes away with daily flights to Frankfurt.

3. The fact that in the region there were and still are quite a fair number of German companies (Grundig, Blaupunkt, Continental, etc.) operating in various industries. Also in Porto (main city) there is a German school (still exists today) that follows the german official school programs from kindergarten to access to German universities.

Those were the reasons behind the decision. Still holds true.

Best regards,
