With your desire to photograph butterflies you would want the faster AF of the Alpha, and birds you will want the extra suitability towards telephoto lenses the SLR design of the Alpha has too.  Architecture while you could get away with either the extra lens choices of alternate brand lenses such as the sigma 10-20 or the samyang 8mm or 14mm lenses would also be a bonus on the Alpha.

The NEX has a better Sony branded wideangle zoom at this stage as the alpha one is modelled after an older Tamron design but that is only a very small tick in the NEX column for the types of photography you have mentioned.

Pretty much unless you are a backpacker, afraid of looking like you are holding a serious camera or looking for low light candid shots indoors without the need for super fast auto focus you'd be getting better photos from the Alpha over the NEX as great as the NEX cameras are.
