So what else is new? Leica had a facility there years ago. Many of the R SLR's were made there.

Leica started production in Portugal as far back as 1972 or 1973. I visited the plant in two different occasions some years ago and saw both analogue and digital M's being made there, analogue SLRs as well as lenses for all kinds of devices, microscopes, scopes, projectors, cameras (?) in their clean room.

The cameras were assembled and tested and then sent to Solms for covering the outer shell and top plate assy and redo the final testing sequence. Only then they can display the "Made in Germany" tag.

I heard this a state of the art facility which they open now will increase production of lenses by several fold.
