I've seen some minor degradation of image quality when noise reduction is set to high or when iso is set to 6400+.  The default camera setting is medium and that seems to work well with iso 3200 and below.

When shooting outdoors during the day, you shouldn't have any problem with keeping iso low. General lighted indoor shots can be done w/o flash with iso 3200 or below -  For low-light indoor shots, using flash seems to be the only way to avoid high iso.
