The question is simple: Would the 105 2.5 give me anything significantly superior to what I'm getting with my 70-200 VRII?

Buy one.  If you don't love it, you'll get to complain about it here and only lose a few dollars in transaction costs.  If you do love it, you can complain about Nikon not making an AF version.  You can't lose!

Now the real answer.  The reputation of the 105mm f/2.5 as a "magic" lens is largely based on a single portrait.  All of the credit really belongs to Sharbat Gula and Steve McCurry.  Give God a footnote as well.  When this lens was current, Nikon used the slogan "We take the world's greatest pictures."  That is and always was ratscat.

If you are more comfortable and confident using the 105mm f/2.5 than your 70-200mm VR-II, you'll get superior results.  But the lens won't give those results to you; you'll have to earn them.
